Congressman Tim Bishop and Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will hold a press conference on Tuesday, October 26 at 1 p.m. at Gabreski Airport to discuss the latest efforts to keep the 106th Air National Guard stationed on Long Island. They will be joined by other officials who are fighting to strengthen the base's position as the Department of Defense begins the next round of the base realignment and closure (BRAC) process in 2005.

At the urging of Congressman Bishop, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy has agreed to transfer an additional 73 acres of land at Gabreski for use by the Air Guard, which is one of the largest employers on the East End. Additionally, KeySpan recently completed a seven-mile gas main extension from Hampton Bays to Gabreski Airport and will soon be able to offer comprehensive infrastructure initiatives to increase energy efficiency at the base at no cost to the federal government. LIPA has also proposed a series of benefits and other financial incentives to support the base.

"I am pleased to see our community pulling together in such a strong show of support for the 106th Air National Guard Rescue Wing," said Bishop. "The 106th is of great importance to the safety, security, and economy of Eastern Long Island."
